A budget of £1000 gives you a lot of options for an engagement ring. Of course, you can spend a whole lot more if you want to (I personally wouldn't), but if you shop online or choose the cheaper diamond engagement ring retailers then it's certainly enough.

If you want your money to go further, buying your engagement ring second hand is the obvious option. Diamonds plummet in price, even if they've only been worn for a few hours, seemingly because a) diamonds have a substantial mark up and b) people are superstitious about used jewellery.
If your budget was lower - perhaps £300 or £500 then I might lean towards buying second hand, but with a budget of £1000 it is probably worth seeing what you can get new first.

Don't believe the hype - £1000 is a perfectly generous budget for a diamond engagement ring. Some people will try to tell you that you need to spend a month or two's salary, but you don't. Spend what you can afford, rather than what you feel you need to.
